Anne understood my simple request for my poor old chair and bought me a perfect choice of materials to choose. My chair was completed 10 days later and it fits in my room perfectly. I would recommend this wonderful lady to anyone - I can't thank Anne enough!

Modern & traditionl upholstery styles

Traditional upholstery methods have been used for over 100 years with incredibly labour-intensive techniques along with traditional materials such as seaweed and straw for stuffing chairs.

Today, when we rebuild a chair, we use materials such as webbing, coil springs, hessian, coir fibre, horse hair, cotton/wool felt wadding, rubberised hair, upholstery foam and twine with each layer built by hand to last a lifetime.  We are also making a move to using more sustainable and eco-friendly materials and fabrics with support from our suppliers.

Thankfully, you don’t need to know your hessian from your rubberised hair; that’s what we’re here for.  Please get in touch to discuss your requirements.

Anne McGarvey

Skilled craftswoman (and auction addict!)

The Upholstery Barn is run by me, Anne McGarvey. My love for upholstery began many years ago after I fell in love with a pair of mid-century modern chairs. I committed to fully restoring these chairs and discovered my love for all things upholstery, furniture and fabrics. Several books, apprenticeships and professional courses later, I started The Upholstery Barn.

I love my work and I take pride in restoring and transforming a loved (or unloved!) piece of furniture be it a dining chair, armchair, sofa, stool, headboard.  Over the years, I have spent a lot of time restoring furniture found at auctions so if you’re looking for a piece of furniture for your home, please get in touch as I’ll be happy to help you shop.
